WHAT IS ADHD COACHING?

  • ADHD Coaching is one method of treatment for those struggling with the traits of ADHD.   It utilizes many concepts from Life Coaching with an added overlay of specific ADHD knowledge, understanding, and strategies.
  • ADHD Coaching involves a structured coaching conversation with a focused intention/agenda it incorporates methods, and models that drive the client towards their goals and outcomes.
  • The Coach works with the client in the conversation to bring awareness and understanding to the way ADHD traits are affecting their life (positive or negative).  It is a “quest” for long term change and skill development

WHO IS AN ADHD COACH?

  • An ADHD coach is often a Life Coach who has extensive knowledge and expertise in ADHD.  ADHD Coaches bring a strong understanding of how ADHD shows up in a person’s life, the impact on individuals and families across a lifespan.  Some coaches work only with adults while others work with children, families, and adults.
  • ADHD Coaches are up on the latest research regarding ADHD, trends, and coaching.  These specialty coaches understand the subtle nuances of ADHD in person’s life and offer strategies, tools, and help to those who need it.  Clients will create goals, action plans, individual strategies, criteria, and techniques for managing the traits associated with ADHD.

WHAT DO ADHD COACHES AND CLIENTS DO?

  • Simply put the ADHD Coach and client work together, in a partnership to help the client achieve what they want in life.  It is a journey of personal discovery around natural strengths, talents, and the values they hold.   This often leads to greater understanding of one’s self and the ADHD difficulties that are unique to them, which in turn leads to the client making informed choices based on how they need to operate.
  • The Coach observes, reflects, asks insightful questions, helps to scaffold and structure the desired outcome into goals and manageable action steps.  The Coach often reminds the clients of successes and wins when the client has forgotten them and helps the client to transfer them to other areas of their life.

WHAT CAN BE WORKED ON OR DISCUSSED IN THE COACHING SESSION?

  • Anything that the client needs to discuss, at times this may be very concrete problem-solving other times it may be brainstorming or processing through ideas.
  • The client is the driver of the coaching process however, coaching is not therapy, financial planning or legal advice.
  • ADHD coaching uses the “growth mindset” and positive perspective while considering the big picture of one’s life and who a person really is.  Clients consider where they are and where they want to be with regards to their goals and create a plan to get there.

IN A NUTSHELL

  • An ADHD coach has a deep understanding of ADHD and how ADHD can impact a person’s life.  ADHD Coaches believe that the client is “whole, capable, and resourceful” and honors the client as the expert of their life.
  • Using natural strengths ADHD Coaching empowers the client to learn about and manage the struggles with ADHD. This process creates new ways of thinking and being as the client is empowered to “re-invent” themselves moving forward with a new way of approaching their life.
